In support of the College of Charleston’s strategic plan goal of prioritizing student experience and success, the Theodore S. Stern Student Center is set to undergo a complete renovation. The building will close at the end of summer 2024. This renovation marks a pivotal step in modernizing facilities to better serve CofC students and the campus community.

The building, which was erected in 1974 and named after the College’s 16th president, Ted Stern, will see several new features with the renovation, including outdoor landscaping, a state-of-the-art event space, additional dining options, gathering and collaboration spaces for students and student organizations, and a new home for the College’s fitness center.

“Our student affairs team has been working closely with numerous partners to plan this transformative renovation,” said Alicia Caudill, executive vice president for the Division of Student Affairs. “Once complete, our new student center will serve as the heart of our student life experience and will provide students and the greater College community with the resources and services they need to be successful.”

During the time of renovation, normal operations handled in the Stern Student Center will be conducted in several different office spaces on campus (moves to these spaces will occur in July 2024):

  • 329 King Street – Division of Student Affairs, Office of the Dean of Students
  • 3rd floor of the BellSouth Building – Office of Student Life, Student Government Association, Campus Activities Board, Cistern Yard Media
  • 4th floor of the BellSouth Building – Fire and EMS
  • 26 Coming Street – Wellness Center, Cougar Pantry, Stern Student Center Operations

Room reservations in the Stern Student Center will cease on August 31, 2024. Faculty and staff are encouraged to use Astra in MyPortal for room reservations, while students can secure reservations by visiting the student life space reservation portal.

The renovation is expected to take approximately two years. The Division of Student Affairs is developing a website to keep the campus community informed about the progress of the renovation.
