Top 3 Scary Stories from the CofC Podcast
Check out these stories of campus ghosts, witchcraft and Poe’s haunting Lowcountry ties.

What do unexplained fire alarms, dark figures at the foot of the bed and a poet’s imagination have in common? They all show us that fear isn’t just for horror movies; it exists in the stories we tell and the voices that carry them forward.
This Halloween, the Speaking of … College of Charleston podcast is spotlighting three previously recorded episodes that explore fear in its many forms, from the eerie to the historical to the personal.
These episodes spotlight storytellers who invite us into worlds where fear sparks curiosity, reflection and more than a few goosebumps. Enjoy … if you dare!

Alumnus Tells Tales of Charleston Ghosts
“The truth is stranger than fiction, meaning any kind of random embellishments, to me, distract from a good ghost story,” according to Ed Macy ’91 (M.A. ’98), a professor, historical journalist and tour guide. The author of best-selling books Haunted Charleston and Haunted Harbor, Macy has spent many years researching and telling Lowcountry ghost stories.

The Frightening History of Witchcraft and Sleep Disorder

“When someone believed they’d been bewitched, they could become so stressed that they experienced full-body distress, even paralysis or death,” says Francesca Gibson ’24.
While at the College of Charleston, Gibson researched how people viewed witchcraft in the 16th and 17th centuries through the lens of history and psychology with Jason Coy, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Whether you’re a student, alum, parent or faculty member, these stories aren’t just spooky; they show how fear shapes the way we tell stories and understand the world around us.
