6 Places CofC Students Are Studying Abroad This Summer

Here are six ways College of Charleston students are spending their summer breaks through educational and exciting study abroad programs.

Why spend summer at home when you can earn credits abroad? College of Charleston students had plenty of spectacular study abroad trips to choose from this summer, from beautiful South Korea to historic Scotland. These programs offer immersive cultural experiences that bring hands-on learning from the classroom to other countries! 

Below are six of the places CofC students spent their summers studying abroad (a full list of summer 2025 programs is available here).

South Korea

Managing Global Tourism

Students in the hospitality and tourism management program had an opportunity to spend their summer immersed in the culture of Seoul, South Korea. Exploring the MICE industry (meetings, incentive conferences, and exhibitions), as well as information technology and strategic management, students delve into management practices, emerging trends and contemporary concepts within the context of the Republic of Korea, while embarking on fun excursions to UNESCO Heritage and National Park.

Presenting in the Performing Arts

Students in the Arts Management Program got to take a wonderful trip to Scotland, including trips to Glasgow. Designed for students pursuing careers in arts management, this program provides a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of arts managers and performing arts production. Activities include site visits to local music and performance venues, trips to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a weekend trip to Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh. Students gained hands-on experience through the demonstration from local leaders in the industry, providing need-to-know information on the issues and trends affecting professionals in the arts management field.

Biology of Invertebrates

Marine biology upperclassmen have the option to complete this mandatory course and lab in the stunning environment of the Cayman Islands. This two-week program focuses on hands-on laboratory work at the Central Caribbean Marine Institute with marine life native to the Caribbean. Activities include snorkeling, hiking, visits to local museums and exploring the beauty of Little Cayman. This course is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain real-life experience in marine biology.

Brazil summer abroad

Business and Culture in Brazil

Business and Portuguese students got to dive into logistics, material and supply chain management in the wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro this summer. This 18-day program introduces students to the business logistics of Brazil while fully immersed in the culture. Excursions include a trip to the Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf Mountain and São Paulo. Courses are taught by Brazilian faculty and feature guest speakers, cultural project work and visits to Brazilian companies in various sectors of business.

Environmental Health/Oceans and Human Health

Students in the public health program had the chance to spend their summer break exploring marine ecosystems and environmental policies in the beautiful coastal city of Barcelona. This program includes visits to the Port of Barcelona, a day trip to Palamós on the Costa Brava and insightful guest lectures on marine environmental renewal. Students also get to visit Barcelona’s marina, the Port Olímpic, for a behind-the-scenes look at the 100 Reefs project, which involves the installation of hundreds of artificial reefs to restore the marine ecosystem in the area. While immersed in Spain’s rich culture, students gain insight on the country’s approaches to conservation and public health.

Arts in Education 

Early childhood education and elementary education majors with beginner-level knowledge of the Italian language had the chance to take an exciting journey to beautiful Italia! With the home base in Reggio Emilia, the program allows participants to explore Florence, Venice and the alluring coastal town of Cinque Terre as a class, with the choice to travel to surrounding cities if they choose. Students explore the basics of the Italian language and culture with visits to five Italian schools, a pasta-making workshop and even a dance class!
