The MMEU Summit is an annual conference that requires students from universities across the nation to simulate the functions and decision-making processes of the European Union. Seventeen universities with over 140 students gathered in Bloomington for this event. Other participating universities include the University of Wisconsin, the United States Air Force Academy, Indiana University Bloomington, Iowa State University and Notre Dame.

The College of Charleston team – including Thomas Atkinson, Simona Carnovale, Jonathan Hoofnagle, Sydney Jackson, Mariella Maglione, Charlotte McNamara and Adriana Sowders – schieved the following awards: first place for Best Delegate in Justice and Home Affairs, second place for Best Delegate in Foreign Affairs and second place for Best Delegation Overall.

“These students participated at the highest level at the Midwest Model European Union,” says Aimee Arias, dean of the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs. “Their ability to compete and excel against renowned institutions is a reflection of their commitment and rigorous preparation. During this simulation, students learned invaluable skills by engaging in civil discourse to address often contentious issues and arrive at a common solution for the greater good. Their achievements are a source of immense pride for our institution.”

The MMEU is the second oldest and largest intercollegiate simulation of the European Union in North America, aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge of the EU.
