Students will present about their research and experiential learning activities at the EXPO on April 10, 2025.

At the College of Charleston, students across all majors are encouraged to engage in research and experiential learning activities. To showcase their discoveries, the College holds an annual EXPO.

“The annual EXPO highlights groundbreaking faculty-student collaboration in academic research and creative works,” says Beth Sundstrom, professor of communication and director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities. “Participation in the EXPO provides real-world transferable skills and empowers students to share their scholarship and creativity with the campus and community.”

EXPO 2025 will be held in TD Arena from 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10. Presentations will be given by undergraduate and graduate students who have conducted mentored research, scholarship, creative inquiry or community service projects during summer 2024 or the 2024-25 academic year. This year, there will be 299 poster presentations, eight oral presentations and four showcase performances.

This year’s keynote speaker is Timothy Barker, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry and recipient of the College’s 2024 William V. Moore Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Award. In his presentation titled, “Drug Discovery in Action: Using Logic and Problem-Solving in Organic Synthesis,” Barker will start out interpreting organic hieroglyphics that are used to describe organic molecules and then discuss how he and his research students go about preparing new compounds with possible medicinal applications. Barker and his research students have been preparing organic compounds targeted to bind the human serotonin transporter in hopes of developing an inhibitor as a new treatment for depression and related medical conditions.
