CofC Professor Is SCAPES Higher Education Teacher of the Year

Karen Smail has been named the South Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport's 2024 Higher Education Teacher of the Year.

Karen Smail, associate professor of health and human performance and director of the physical education program at the College of Charleston, has been named the South Carolina Association for Physical Education and Sport‘s 2024 Higher Education Teacher of the Year. She will be recognized and given her award on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Conference in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

“Congratulations to Dr. Karen Smail and the entire College of Charleston for all the work you do to prepare the workforce of tomorrow,” says SCAPES President Merri Martin. “The College of Charleston is blessed to have such a wonderful professor.”

SCAPES strives to implement and advocate the development of physical education, physical activity and physical fitness through high quality, research-based programs facilitated by competent, educated professionals. SCAPES delivers these programs equally to all citizens of South Carolina by promoting opportunities for professional development and participation in programs, projects and activities for its members.

SCAPES is an association of SCAHPERD, whose mission is to promote health, physical activity and wellness among the state’s citizens through effective professional development, leadership, education and advocacy.
