The College of Charleston received the Silver Grade Award from the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs for its military academic practices.

The College’s Office of Veteran and Military Student Services was recognized for its established and effective process of identifying its veteran/military-affiliated student population and its targeted information on its website. The office’s program connecting new veteran/military students with veteran peer advisors their first semester was praised for its ability to guide new veteran/military-affiliated students to campus resources, through college processes and during their transition to campus.

The College was lauded for its monthly Green Zone training, which provides faculty, staff and students with an understanding of the military experience and how to support veterans as they transition to campus life. It also provides on- and off-campus resources and support services for military-connected students. 

The College’s student-led chartered programs, the Student Veterans Association chapter and SALUTE Veteran National Honor Society chapter, were recognized for encouraging inclusion and policies that improve access and opportunities for student veterans. Both chapters are instrumental in advising the college administrators, faculty, staff and students regarding matters that affect veterans and their families.

In addition, the College was recognized for having a system to evaluate and award academic credit based on military training and experience and increasing the military credit limit to 66 credits; for having a dedicated military-friendly contacts for veteran students in every major department; and for having a centralized location for veteran services with a lounge, study space and computer lab reserved for veterans/military-affiliated students.
