College of Charleston Graduates Receive Fulbright Awards
Sophie Faughnan '24 and Maddy Landa '24 recently received highly competitive awards from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

College of Charleston graduates Sophie Faughnan ’24 and Maddy Landa ’24 recently received highly competitive awards from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which enables recent college graduates and young professionals to study, research and teach overseas.
Faughnan was a finalist for Spain’s English Teaching Assistant Award and is currently teaching in the Canary Islands. She majored in Spanish and psychology with a minor in education.
A finalist for Spain’s English Teaching Assistant Award, Landa majored in international studies (global studies concentration) and political science with minors in Spanish and women’s and gender studies.
Both Landa and Faughnan were members of the College of Charleston Honors College.
Music major Katie Banish ’24 was named a Fulbright alternate for Italy’s English Teaching Assistant Award.
“I am thrilled that Sophie and Maddy were selected as Fulbright finalists and that Katie was selected as a Fulbright alternate,” says Sidney Woram, associate director of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards. “The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is a highly desirable award, and there are always more qualified candidates than available spots. I am so pleased that Fulbright has recognized not only these students’ incredible achievements, but also the College’s ability to nurture globally fluent citizens.”
The Fulbright program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
