Public Safety will present ALERRT's Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events for faculty and staff on July 10 and July 31, 2024.

The College of Charleston Department of Public Safety will present ALERRT’s Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) for faculty and staff in the Robert Scott Small Building, room 131 on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, July 10, 2024, 1–4 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 31, 2024, 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

ALERRT, Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, was founded in cooperation with Texas State University and is one of the leading agencies in law enforcement critical response training and has received endorsements from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The class also includes a section on “Stop the Bleed,” which is endorsed by the American College of Surgeons. This section will be presented by a College of Charleston police officer who is a certified EMT and will teach attendees how to apply tourniquet and the basics of saving a life in a critical incident.

“The importance of preparation cannot be overstated. While the time investment is serious, those who have attended have been extremely happy with the knowledge, skills, mindset and tactics the course emphasizes,” says Deputy Chief Rusty Myers, adding that the class has been presented to the College of Charleston senior staff and to several departments and centers across campus, including the Addlestone Library; the Early Childhood Development Center; the School of Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering; the Division of Business Affairs; the Division of Student Affairs; and the Office of Human Resources. “Feel free to ask around. It is well worth your time!”

Please RSVP with Deputy Chief Myers at myersr1@charleston.edu to attend or to host a class in the future.
