College of Charleston to Host Forested Wetlands Conference

The College of Charleston is hosting the Forested Wetlands of the Upper Estuary Conference.

Five College of Charleston students, a recent CofC alumna and three CofC faculty members will showcase their research during the upcoming Forested Wetlands of the Upper Estuary Conference. The event is scheduled to take place March 5-7, 2024, at the Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center on the College of Charleston campus.

Sponsored by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and the College of Charleston, the conference will focus on the critical role of tidal freshwater forested wetlands as unique transition ecosystems, particularly in the southeastern United States.

Participants at the conference will delve into topics such as environmental change, monitoring, societal values, ecological properties, carbon storage and management strategies.

The College of Charleston projects to be presented are as follows:

  • “Mapping South Carolina’s Historic Rice Fields: Learning From the Past to Prepare for the Future,” presented by environmental and sustainability studies graduate student Evan Cizler and geology professor Norm Levine
  • “Analyzing Flaws in TR-55: Stormwater Management Implications for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed,” presented by environmental and sustainability studies graduate student Briar Ownby-Connolly
  • “Ephemeral Wetlands Are not Arthropod Biodiversity Hotspots,” presented by junior biology major Matthew McDonald and associate professor of biology Dan McGlinn
  • “Tidal Freshwater Wetland Research on the Santee Experimental Forest – Hydrology and Carbon Dynamics,” presented by Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences chair Timothy Callahan
  • “Impact of Controlled Burning and Water Inundation on Canby’s Dropwort (Oxypolis canbyi) Reintroduction,” presented by Alannah Burrill ’23 and associate professor of biology Dan McGlinn
  • “Rain and Tide: Assessing Coastal Streamflow and Compound Flooding Risk,” presented by environmental and sustainability studies graduate students Hannah Quast and Nicole Weirich and Department of Geology and Environmental Geosciences chair Timothy Callahan
