Heads Up When Crossing the Streets On, Near Campus

Welcome (or welcome back!) to all College of Charleston students, faculty and staff!  

Our beautiful urban campus is located in the heart of downtown Charleston, a densely populated peninsula where people on foot, bikes, scooters and skateboards occupy the same street space as vehicles. 

The College prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of every member of our campus community.  

Please observe the following pedestrian safety tips when crossing busy intersections near campus. 

Pedestrian Safety Tips  

• Follow the rules of the road and obey traffic signs and signals. 
• Cross streets at crosswalks or intersections, not mid-block.  
• Stand well back from the edge of the curb when waiting to cross, as cars may drift close to the curb.  
• Watch for cars that might be turning, entering or exiting driveways or backing up in parking lots. Be aware that many pedestrian injuries involve drivers making illegal or improper turns.  
• Stay alert when crossing the street: Check for signs, signals and the actions of the drivers, cyclists and other pedestrians around you.  
• Stay off your phone, make eye contact with drivers when possible and wait for cars to make a clear, complete stop before crossing.
