College of Charleston Mortar Board Chapter Receives Awards
The Mortar Board National College Honor Society recognized the College of Charleston with two prestigious awards.

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes outstanding junior and senior students for excellence in scholarship, leadership and service while empowering them to strengthen the College of Charleston and the broader community through meaningful leadership and service initiatives.
Chartered in 2023, the College of Charleston Mortar Board chapter received several awards in its first year of operation.
This year, the College received two awards: the prestigious Silver Torch Award for executing all chapter standards and having a positive impact, and the Project Excellence Award in Faculty, Staff and Student Recognition for its “professor coffee hour,” which is anticipated to become an annual event to foster awareness of the honor society and encourage both student and faculty participation.
“Receiving national recognition once again reflects not only the success of this year’s initiatives, but also the sustained tradition of excellence our chapter has built over time,” says Bethany Goodier, associate professor of communication and director of the Martin Center for Mentorship in Communication, who also serves as the faculty adviser for CofC’s Mortar Board chapter. “These national recognitions are a testament to the dedication, creativity and servant leadership of our Mortar Board members.”
The College of Charleston Mortar Board chapter is one of several honor societies represented on campus, connecting students to a network of scholars, leaders and professionals. Members of Mortar Board are in the top third of their class, with academic performance, demonstrated leadership and service considered for eligibility.
“Our students are committed to creating programs that celebrate others, strengthen connections across campus and foster a culture of scholarship, leadership and service,” says Goodier. “We are incredibly proud of our students and the positive impact they continue to make on the College of Charleston community.”
