7 Ways to Celebrate Sustainability Week at CofC

The College of Charleston Center for Sustainable Development will host Sustainability Week from March 30 to April 3.

Each year, the College of Charleston Center for Sustainable Development hosts events in honor of Sustainability Week.

This year’s celebration will take place from March 30 to April 3, featuring many interactive activities that promote efforts benefiting our campus community and the environment.

Check out seven of the events below!

Monday, March 30
2:30–4 p.m.
Rivers Green

Discover the native plants growing on our campus as CofC Grounds leads this guided walk, then help support pollinators by joining in on a solitary bee home-building workshop led by Students Gardens.

Monday, March 30
6–8 p.m.
Randolph Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall (room 203)

Enjoy a multi-course dinner featuring locally sourced seafood. The South Carolina Aquarium’s Good Catch program, in collaboration with the Center for Sustainable Development and Charleston Culinary Group, will prepare the dinner. At the same time, attendees can learn about sustainable seafood practices in the Lowcountry from a panel of professionals. An RSVP is required to attend the event.

Tuesday, March 31
5–7 p.m.
Rita Liddy Hollings Science Center, Room 103

In this alumnus talk, climate scientist and carbon Chemist Garrett Boudinot ’15, founder and CEO of Vycarb, will trace the journey from academic research to building a scaling a real-world climate solution.

Wednesday, April 1
11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Sottile Clock (corner of College Way and Green Way)

Shop sustainably! You’ll find free items at the Cougar Free Store Pop-Up and fresh, local food at the Farmers Market. This is a great opportunity to interact with campus and community members and participate in fun activities!

Thursday, April 2
2:30–4 p.m.
School of Natural and Environmental Studies, Room 138

Are you interested in a career in sustainability? Attend the sustainability career panel to hear from professionals in the Charleston area, including guests from the Sustainability Institute, the South Carolina Aquarium and Carolina Ocean Alliance. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and make meaningful connections.

Friday, April 3
12 p.m.
Cistern Yard

You could win free South Carolina Aquarium tickets by helping to keep our campus community clean! Join the Students of the Marsh, in collaboration with the CSD and the Cougar Activities Board, on a litter sweep. These efforts will cover our campus and surrounding neighborhoods, helping to protect the environment and benefit community wellbeing.

Friday, April 3
4–6 p.m.
Addlestone Library, Room 127

Join us to celebrate the artists and art displayed at the Life Below Water art exhibit! Want to learn more about marine sustainability while supporting our campus community? Stop by the Addelstone Library Rotunda all week to see this exhibit on sustainability, featuring artwork by CofC students, faculty and staff. Then, join us for a reception to celebrate the artists and art displayed at the Life Below Water art exhibit! 



Madeline Jacaruso is a senior communication major from Essex, Connecticut, with interests in writing, journalism and strategic communication. She is a Martin Scholar and a member of the Eta Sigma chapter of Delta Gamma sorority.
