Main Feature, CofC Podcast

On this episode of the "Speaking of ... College of Charleston" podcast, we learn quick, practical tips to track spending, avoid costly mistakes and use campus resources to save more and worry less.

College is a time of growth and independence and that includes learning how to manage your finances. From tuition and textbooks to everyday expenses like coffee breaks and parking, the costs can add up quickly. So how do you stay on top of your budget while still making the most of your college experience?

On this episode of the Speaking of … College of Charleston podcast, we’re diving into financial wellness, what it means, why it matters and how you can take control of your money while you’re a student at the College. Joining us is Liz Cooper, associate director for the Financial Wellness Program in the Career Center, and junior Elisa Peñaloza, a student ambassador majoring in marketing.

Whether you’re a first-year student or getting ready to graduate, this conversation will help you take control of your finances and set yourself up for long-term success.

Cooper shares practical strategies for tracking spending, avoiding common financial mistakes and borrowing student loans responsibly.

“The first habit every student should build is tracking their spending,” says Cooper. “It’s the foundation of financial wellness.”

Peñaloza offers a student perspective, sharing her own experience with budgeting and tips for enjoying Charleston on a budget, from free campus resources like the Cougar Pantry and the Cougar Free Store to local discount apps such as Blackbird. The conversation also highlights tools like iGrad, a free financial literacy platform for students.

Both guests emphasize the importance of starting early, whether that means creating a budget, building credit or exploring savings and investment options.

If you’ve ever felt stressed about money or unsure where to start, this episode offers practical advice – and reassurance that you are not alone.

As Cooper and Peñaloza remind us: Save more and worry less!
