On Monday, Aug. 18, incoming students participated in the annual convocation program and Maroon Mayhem.

The College’s convocation welcomes new students, encouraging them to embark on their own intellectual journey. It also introduces them to the institution’s academic traditions, history, symbols and mottos. In this symbolic tradition, students begin their academic journey by walking through Porter’s Lodge and conclude their academic journey by departing through the same archway at the end of graduation.

This year, RAs and other student leaders led first-year and transfer students to Porter’s Lodge and into the Cistern Yard for the convocation program. As the students walked down George and St. Philip streets, they were greeted by faculty and staff members welcoming them to the CofC campus with cheers and applause.

The scene had the feel of a pep rally as students streamed through the arch at Porter’s Lodge and were greeted by DJ Scrib and the College of Charleston cheer and dance teams.

The convocation ceremony featured President Andrew T. Hsu, Provost Suzanne Austin and Student Government Association representatives.

“It is my honor to welcome you to the College today to start off the academic year,” Austin told the students. “As of today, you are officially a member of the College of Charleston family.”

Austin’s comments were followed by the alma mater before President Hsu took the podium to welcome the Class of 2029.

“Each and every one of you will better understand yourself by the end of your time here at the College of Charleston – what you’re good at or even what you’re great at, what you’re passionate about and what you may want to do as a career and for the rest of your life,” Hsu said. “These next years at the College of Charleston are going to set you up for many, many best years to come through your life. That is what the College of Charleston education is all about: setting you up for lifelong success.”

After convocation, students were encouraged to visit campus resources and enjoy lunch in one of the campus dining facilities before heading to Maroon Mayhem, a Weeks of Welcome signature event with games, giveaways, music and more.
