Nearly 35,000 people will descend upon Charleston this Saturday for the annual Cooper River Bridge Run. Among this crowd will be 75 members of the College of Charleston’s Bridge Run Training Program.

Led by the College’s Campus Recreation Services, the program gives educational support on preparation for running events, proper training and racing nutrition and running tips to avoid injuries. Resources are shared with participants by email and video format and are tailored for beginner and skilled runners.

“It has been an incredible opportunity to support the College of Charleston community in reaching their goals through the Bridge Run Training Program,” says Jessica Dettwiller, CRS’s assistant director of fitness. “In collaboration with our exercise science student intern each week, we have provided participants with various resources. I am excited to watch this program continue to grow and evolve in the future.”

Having begun training in January, participants are not required to run the actual Bridge Run, although most do.

“The program does a great job of appealing to the different levels of runners,” says Sean Hamby, a junior exercise science major who also serves as an intern with the program. “It really allows for the participants to tailor the training to their needs and schedules.”

At the conclusion of the Bridge Run, the CofC community, Clyde the Cougar and President Andrew T. Hsu (who is running the race) will celebrate at the College of Charleston tent in Marion Square, where race participants may pick up CofC swag and take selfies with President Hsu and Clyde.

Don’t forget to post race-day pictures to Instagram using #BridgeRunWithCofC for a chance to be featured on the College’s Instagram feed.
