CofC Faces to Know: Lamar Williams
Meet Lamar Williams, operations captain in the Department of Public Safety.
Name: Lamar Crevon Williams

Education/Background: Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina
Job Title: Special Service/Operations Captain
How long have you worked at the College? I have been at the College for 14 years.
What are your job responsibilities? I enforce the laws of South Carolina and the rules and regulations applicable to the College of Charleston. My duties include creating the safety plans for commencement, A Charleston Affair, move-in, all athletics events and other events throughout campus. I oversee our department’s CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) accreditation and all incident reports and court cases.
What do you like most about your job? I enjoy meeting families during the move-in process and watching their students’ progress to graduation. I also love the feeling of making a difference in a student’s life when they are in need.
What question do you get asked most in your job and what’s your typical answer? The question I get asked the most from our new freshman parents revolves around the safety at College of Charleston. I tell our parents that I take great pride in the fact that our officers are proactive in keeping violent crimes off our campus.
What’s your favorite location on campus and why? My favorite location on campus is the intersection of College Way and the promenade (Green Way). This is a great location for people watching. I think it’s pretty cool to see students from all walks of life interact with each other.
What are your hobbies? I’m a huge LA Lakers and Washington Commanders fan. I love cooking on the grill, smoker or Blackstone. At home I’m known as Grill Daddy.
What personal and/or professional accomplishment are you most proud of? Professionally, I have been named Officer of the Year twice.
Name a creative work (book, movie, performance, etc.) you enjoyed recently and why? My daughter is a student and theater major at Charleston County School of the Arts. I enjoy watching her performances and growth from the 6th grade to now, her 11th grade year.
What was your favorite TV show growing up? I loved Sanford and Son and Miami Vice.
What’s next on your bucket list? A trip to South Africa
What is something your campus colleagues would be surprised to know about you? I am a kidney cancer survivor after the removal of my left kidney.
What was your first job? My first job was as a pizza cook at Show Biz Pizza which changed to Chuck E. Cheese. This was the best job ever during the early ’90s.
What’s your favorite Lowcountry restaurant? My wife and I enjoy Hanks Seafood.
Describe your perfect day: My perfect day is waking up with a view of the ocean in Aruba with my beautiful wife.
