Winter Break Energy-Saving Checklist for CofC Employees
Save your energy! Follow this energy-saving checklist from Facilities Management before you head off to recharge over the winter break!
As College of Charleston faculty and staff prepare to leave for winter break, Facilities Management reminds them to help the College save energy – and money – by completing the following energy shutdown checklist in their classrooms and offices:
- Turn off lights at the switch (do not rely on sensors).
- If possible, adjust thermostats to use the least amount of energy practical (50–55° F is a safe range).
- Make certain all windows are closed.
- Close blinds and curtains to save energy.
- Shut down computers in all classrooms, offices and computer labs (leaving them in sleep mode still consumes energy).
- Turn off computer monitors.
- Turn off all other appliances and equipment (non-networked printers, speakers, projectors, electronic white boards, etc.).
- Unplug mini-refrigerators, but remember to clean them out, leave the door open and let them drain while they defrost to avoid mildew.
- Unplug “energy vampires” like televisions, coffee pots, digital clocks and cellphone chargers.
- Turn off the power switches on power strips (this is just as effective as unplugging those multiple devices).
