CofC Staff, Faculty Invited to First-Generation Day Celebration
On Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, Chris Korey, associate provost for student success, sent faculty and staff the following message regarding National First-Generation Day and the College's new First-Generation Staff and Faculty Directory:
Dear Faculty and Staff,
Next Friday (11/8) is National First-Generation Day. This fall, we welcomed 437 new first-generation students to campus. Please join us for a drop-in celebration of first-generation students, faculty, and staff next Thursday (11/7) from 1:30 to 3:00 pm in the atrium of the newly renovated Simons Center for the Arts.
We are also excited to announce the official launch of the First-Generation Staff and Faculty Directory! This resource aims to connect our first-generation students—those whose parents or guardians have not completed a four-year degree—with others on campus who have been on the same journey.
If you were a first-generation college student, we invite you to submit your information to be included in this directory by submitting this form.
Additionally, we have included a section in the directory titled “Diverse Experiences and Identities.” This section highlights Parenting Students, International & First-Generation Americans, LGBTQ+, and Military & Veterans. First-gen students who identify with these groups often face unique challenges and complexities as they progress through college, and we encourage you to indicate if you would like to be included as a mentor in one of these categories.
Thank you for helping to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all our students!
Chris
