College of Charleston Faces to Know: Meredith Frazier
Meet Meredith Frazier, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
Name: Meredith Frazier
Hometown: Cornelius, North Carolina
Education/Background: I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Elon University – my experience at Elon inspired me to pursue a PUI position – then earned my doctorate from Vanderbilt University. Prior to joining CofC, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina (NIEHS/NIH).
Job title: Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
How long have you worked at the College? Since fall 2022 – still very new!
What are your job responsibilities? My primary responsibilities are to teach biochemistry courses and mentor undergraduates in research projects.
What do you like most about your job? I love seeing students develop high-level research skills and confidence as scientists.
What question do you get asked most in your job and what’s your typical answer? I’m frequently asked for recommendation letters. I enjoy sharing a student’s achievements from their time at CofC – it’s always fun to learn about what they’ve done outside of my class or lab.
What’s your favorite location on campus and why? The solar pavilion is my favorite lunch spot: shade, fans, fresh air!
What are your hobbies? I love to read and go to live sporting events.
What personal and/or professional accomplishment are you most proud of? I received the Karpay Award in Structural Biology in graduate school, which recognizes a collaborative and collegial scientist for excellence in research. I strive to be a collegial team player, so I was very proud to be recognized for that.
Name a creative work (book, movie, performance, etc.) you enjoyed recently and why? I went to see Six when the touring show came through town – a very fun take on Henry VIII’s wives.
What was your favorite TV show growing up? I always watched the primetime SportsCenter for the Top 10 plays, but otherwise my brother and I were outside playing, weather permitting.
What is something your campus colleagues would be surprised to know about you? I got into curling during my postdoc (in North Carolina of all places!). It is so much fun, and there’s a surprising amount of physics for nerds like me. Charleston Curling Club hosts Learn to Curl events periodically for people interested in trying it out. Also, as of this summer – when I went to Toronto for a Blue Jays game – I’ve been to all the MLB stadiums!
What was your first job? Science day camp assistant counselor
What’s your favorite Lowcountry restaurant? Kultura’s brunch is always good.
Describe your perfect day: A lazy morning reading a book followed by an afternoon RiverDogs game.
