College of Charleston assistant sailing coach Ian Barrows earned bronze in the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s skiff event in Marseille, France, on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024. Barrows and partner Hans Henken – whose sister Paris Henken ’22 sailed at the College of Charleston and became the first female Olympian in the school’s history during the 2016 Summer Olympics – are first time Olympians themselves.
The duo of Barrows and Henken recorded 10 Top 10 finishes across the 12 preliminary races and jumped from 12th place to sixth overall from the first to second day of racing. Third and second places finishes in the ninth and 10th races, respectively, propelled the team to fourth overall heading into the medal race.
Barrows and Henken used an eighth-place finish in the medal race, which bested Team Ireland’s 18th place regatta, to jump into third place overall and secure bronze.
