The College of Charleston Alumni Association Board of Directors voted on March 2, 2024, to create a society for former officers and board members called the J. Waties Waring Society.
The society is named for CofC alumnus Julius Waties Waring, Class of 1900, who served as president of the Alumni Association from 1916–18. Judge Waring later became a notable leader in the Civil Rights Movement, authoring a precedent for Brown vs. Board of Education and working with Thurgood Marshall to obtain a Supreme Court ruling to end segregation in schools.
Former board members were inducted as the inaugural members of the Waring Society during the annual meeting on May 3, 2024, and they will hereafter be known as Waring Fellows.
The Alumni Association plans to engage the Waring Fellows each year during Spring Alumni Weekend and will induct new fellows at the annual meetings as members of the Board of Directors complete their terms of office.
